Why bodies are changing through the years
Apart from fashion influences, eating habits, portion sizes, fitness trends, and diets have also dictated how bodies have changed over the years. For celebrities, movie and TV trends have also influenced the way that they prepared their bodies for certain roles. For a rundown on how Filipino celebrity bodies have changed, let’s start with certain body goals of the 50s and all the way to the present day.
Soft and curvy
The 1950s was the Golden Age of Philippine cinema, and stars such as Amalia Fuentes, Alicia Vergel, Bella Flores, Susan Roces, Marlene Dauden, and Gloria Romero graced the silver screen. These ladies favored gently waved hairstyles, conservative clothing, and they lit up the screen with their glowing faces and were much praised for their natural curves. The 50’s body type remains the most attainable for Pinay fans to this day.
Slim with no hint of visible muscle definition
Stars such as Alma Moreno and Vilma Santos were favorites of the 1970’s film industry, and the actresses were so in demand that Ate Vi appeared in 12 movies in 1973, while Alma was in 16 films in 1976. The actresses shared a lot of similarities—both had a few daring roles, both had their own variety shows wherein they performed in body-hugging costumes, and both are now active in politics. In the 70s, the two ladies had almost similar body types, slim yet still voluptuous, and having muscle definition wasn’t a trend yet during those times.
Slim and aerobicized
Sharon Cuneta, Rio Locsin, Snooki Serna, Cherie Gil, and Maricel Soriano dominated the film and television industry during the 1980s, and while the celeb body trend leaned towards being slim, the aerobics trend of the decade inspired many female celebrities to get more toned. However, viewers had to wait a few more decades before some female celebs would think about getting well-defined abs.
Voluptuous for some, slim for others
The 90s saw two major female celebrity body trends emerge. Popular teen ABS-CBN stars Claudine Barretto, Jolina Magdangal, Mylene Dizon, G. Toengi, Cheska Garcia, and Rica Peralejo adopted the aesthetic of the times which called for a slim look. Meanwhile, the boom of the infamous sexy flicks called Titillating Films, or TF for short, had some women attempting to copy Aya Medel, Priscilla Almeda, and Rosanna Roces’ voluptuous physique.
Slim, toned, with defined muscles
The early 2000s saw a shift in the way that female celebrities took care of their bodies. This was also the decade that many celebrities became more candid about having cosmetic surgery, with some openly endorsing cosmetic surgeons such as Dr. Vicky Belo and Dr. Manny Calayan.
These days, Kapamilya stars such as Anne Curtis, Kathryn Bernardo, and Erich Gonzales are all about fitness, and all three ladies sport a toned body with visible muscle definition, particularly in the abdominal area. These three, along with other health conscious celebs, are inspiring ladies all over the country to hit the gym, join marathons, and live a healthy lifestyle.
For now, it appears that the slim and toned look is here to stay. It’s highly possible that body trends will continue to evolve over the years, and Pinoy fans will surely continue to get some fitness inspiration from their favorite celebs as the years go by.
