Flower Crowns Are The Newest Celebrity Beauty Trend


There are several previously-thought-to-be-naff fashion and beauty trends out there right now that we would happily align ourselves with. From the unexpected resurgence of the fanny pack, to wearing your sunglasses indoors and at night like a ’90s boyband god, we’re very into this ‘I don’t care about anything, except maybe I do’ vibe we’re getting.

Enter: the new-age flower crown.

A worthy departure from the bridal variety, or the Coachella-girl with a kaftan on variety, this newfangled flower is, more or less, the wood nymph incarnation we always hoped it would be.

And with star backers like Jennifer Lawrence and Kirsten Dunst (in beyond-heaven Rodarte, draped with a boa of baby’s breath like a goddamn queen), we’re hoping that we’re one day closer to it being socially acceptable to turn up to work adorned in floral wreaths like we stepped out of a woodland wedding Pinterest mood board.

From New York Fashion Week: Filipino experts reveal celebrity hair trends | Fashion and Beauty, Lifestyle Features, The Philippine Star


MANILA, Philippines — Former “Asia’s Next Top Model” judge Lourd Ramos is back at the New York Fashion Week (NYFW) this September to observe the latest trends on hairstyles and makeup from brands all over the world.

“From clothes to hair and makeup, it’s really exciting to be at New York Fashion Week because everything from it matters. It’s a very good experience to see the trends with my own eyes,” shares the celebrity hairstylist and salon chain owner, who has been covering NYFW for years.

He has observed that unlike the generations before them, Filipinos now want what is in the runway.

Here are the hairstyle trends he has observed so far from NYFW: “This year it’s all about precision, lines, fresh outtakes of different trends from blonde, to straight and wet look to soft curls.”

“Layers and precision are ‘in’ this season,” notes Lourd. “It’s either you go super straight for precision or go with layers.”

Another celebrity hairstylist, Henri Calayag, says other key trends this year are:

  • For women: a short bob chopped right smack on the jaw line, with raw lines and rough edges, but with no bangs because of the length.

“If you wear bangs with jaw-length short hair, the proportion is not right, it makes you look smaller,” Calayag cautions.

“Time has really changed because even those in the corporate world they also carry the nomadic or bearded look, but this is not universally flattering. Only to certain groups,” Calayag explains.

According to Lourd, besides blonde, mahoganies are also big this year with Rihanna and Olivia Palermo as pegs for deep brown mahogany and Kourtney Kardashian for deep darker browns.

More than following trends, Lourd and Henri believe that a good hairstyle will make one stand out in the many parties ahead this upcoming holiday season.

Bizarre beauty trends emerge after every Fashion Week, but this year it feels like there’s more than ever. Maybe they took inspiration from Nelly circa 2002 – who knows, but it’s definitely one trend we’re hoping doesn’t take off here.

4. Upside down eyeliner

Traditional eyeliner is just old news. Who even looks good with a delicate flick on the upper lid (everyone)? Well, now it’s all about drawing your liner on upside down – you know, to give your eyes an unbalanced appearance. You might also spot ‘bubbled’ liner on the London catwalks this this week – where the flicks become more of a blob-like shape.

5. Pop-star blue eyeshadow

If you don’t immediately see this snap from Tadashi Shoji’s New York show and think of Blu Cantrell, then you are too young. The singer made intense blue eyeshadow famous back in the early 2000s, but they were going strong in the 90s as well. It’s not a trend we were hoping would make a comeback, but we have a feeling blue will be a theme in London and Paris.

6. Monobrows

Since then, people have been going brow crazy – with a real resurgence of extreme bushy arches. Squiggle eyebrows are a thing and it’s possibly the strangest beauty trend of 2017


It’s been a bit of an odd year in the beauty world. We’ve seen boob-emblazoned nails, unicorn make-up and holographic hair, but there’s a new eyebrow trend that’s hitting it big on social media at the moment, and it’s arguably the strangest of the lot.

Squiggle brows. What is it, you ask? For some reason, unbeknown to us, bloggers and amateur make-up artists have been painting their brows into waves above their eyes, and the finished look is, err, unique.

Though it might look a little silly, it takes quite a while and some form of skill to perfect this trend. First, you have to create the wavy shape using washable glue (because you don’t really want to permanently pluck them into squiggles!), colour them in, then intricately paint on concealer to give the squiggles defined edges. And, the look wouldn’t be complete without matching lips.

We’re not really sure if the look is wearable outside of Instagram, but one thing we’re certain of is that this won’t be last strange beauty craze of the year.

Celebrity Beauty Regrets: 7 Trends Stars Probably Wish They’d Opted out Of


Here’s the unfortunate thing about beauty trends, they can change pretty quickly. Worse, they can look pretty f–king ridiculous in hindsight. Even more unfortunately for celebrities, when they participate in what turns out to be bad beauty trends, their looks are captured on camera for… well, pretty much ever. Whether it’s a streaky dye job that was totally on trend back in the ’00s, a blue eyeshadow craze that swept the red carpets in the early ’90s, or just way too much blush throughout the eras, stars, unfortunately, bear the brunt of our discarded beauty looks for years to come.

And some of them are repeat offenders. Christina Aguilera, Nicole Richie, Paris Hilton, and Gwen Stefani were superstars in the early 2000s — but being a big star then meant rocking some truly heinous looks. Honestly, we really don’t understand how we thought they all looked good at the time. And it kind of makes us a little terrified to think about the trends that we’re rocking now. In 10 years, are we going to look back and laugh at our messy top knots? Or our contour kits? Will Kylie Jenner‘s lip kits still be the ultimate in lip color? Or will the entire Kardashian beauty empire fall?

As long as we don’t buy into squiggle brows, we’re probably safe, right? Or are our thick, natural, defined brows — the antithesis of the overly-plucked, pencil thin brows of yesteryear — going to seem bushy and unruly and way, way too big? It’s kind of a nightmare to imagine. So, uh, let’s not. Instead of worrying about what trends we engage in now that will look ridiculous in 10 or 15 years, let’s just laugh at the old ones instead. And, for now, we can at least pretend that the inevitability of cringe-worthy fashion and beauty isn’t in our future.
