Celebrity Halloween Costumes 2017 | The Candor

Emily Nitti

Staff Writer

This past weekend, celebrities across Hollywood got into the Halloween spirit and this year’s costumes were bigger than they have ever been before. Usually there are big trends that seem to follow, whether it be superheroes or vampires. This year it seems that the majority wanted to be Pennywise from the remake of the film It. Celebrities follow the same trends as we do relying on pop culture, movies and TV shows that are popular during the fall season or viral internet trends.

From Selena To The Final Scene From ‘Se7en,’ This Year In Celebrity Halloween Costumes: LAist

Halloween is a time for people to show off some of their best pun-based costumes, pop culture recreations, or simple displays of craftsmanship. For celebrities, though, Halloween is often the time to remind us regular people that they, too, know how to have fun and dress up. Admittedly, though, celebrities often have a much higher budget for costumes than the rest of us—it’s unlikely Gwyneth Paltrow or Kim Kardashian is perusing Goodwill for the best this-shirt-looks-close-enough-to-what-I-wanted costume. Rest of us, shmest of us.

This year, many took to social media to show off their best looks. It seems like the biggest trends were either dressing up as other dead celebrities or as scenes from popular movies. A bit solipsistic if you ask me, but hey, sometimes the best costumes come from being deeply familiar with whatever it is you’re dressed up as.

Demi Lovato posted to her Instagram story to show off her version of the late, great, Selena Quintanilla.

Gwyneth Paltrow recreated the iconic final scene from Se7en. Paltrow starred in the movie alongside her then-boyfriend Brad Pitt, and her character’s decapitated head is a big unboxing surprise at the end of the movie.

Kim and Kourtney Kardashian dressed up as Madonna and Michael Jackson, respectively. The costumes are incredibly detailed, but Kourtney clearly doesn’t stand up to MJ’s dancing.

Kim also dressed up as Cher alongside Jonathan Cheban as Sonny.

She also dressed up as Aaliyah (Kim, come on, leave some costumes for next year).

Zoe Kravitz dressed up as Marla Singer, Helena Bonham Carter’s character from Fight Club.

Busy Philipps, whose daughter went as, well, Busy Phillips, dressed up as Hedwig from Hedwig and the Angry Itch.

Adele also dressed up, but it’s unclear what the costume actually is. The Daily Mail described her as “a glamorous clown” and InStyle describes her as a “glamorous jester” so we’re going to go with “glamorous jokester.”

5 Super-Easy Halloween Costumes That Are Way Smarter Than Anything Anyone Else Is Doing

For every Wonder Woman, Ruth Bader Ginsburg, or Eleven from Stranger Things costume you see this Halloween, there are likely to be 10 more at the next party. If you’re racking your brain for a clever idea, but you also (like any clever person) have procrastinated yourself into costume crisis mode, we’re here for you. All you need to tap in to the 2017 zeitgeist is probably already in your closet, a thrift shop, or party supply store. We came up with five of this year’s most ubiquitous trends that double as incredibly easy Halloween costumes.

Last year’s top foreign lifestyle import hasn’t gone anywhere; hygge, the Nordic art of being cozy and adorable, is still a dominating force on Pinterests everywhere. Lucky for you, it’s also a very comfortable Halloween costume! Find a comfy sweater, preferably white and cable knit, wrap yourself in a sheepskin throw, and carry a mug. When people fill it with Halloween punch, make sure to say tak instead of thanks.

Instagram Influencer
Sponcon became a way of life this year for celebrity “whos” on their social media channels, especially on Instagram, where self-styled “influencers” don’t even have to be famous for anything else. (Posing against a brightly painted wall and hawking various lifestyle wares on your feed now constitutes its own very lucrative career.) Combine the most notorious #sponcon products into one costume, or as many as you can: Carry around a subscription box full of swag; nibble on some hair-health gummy bears; wear a waist trainer or corset and some aviator sunglasses. If you can wear a #spon or #ad sign, then we’ll know you’ve been paid for your endorsement.

Unicorn Toast
Topping off the lifestyle trends, unicorn toast was a whimsical if strange addition to the overhead-food-photography trend, prompting praise and disgust alike. A unicorn toast costume just needs, of course, a unicorn horn, an outfit with bright, iridescent colors, some sparkly jewelry, and a willingness to carry around some toast with you all night. You’ll never go hungry, unlike Instagram food photographers who have to take pictures before they can eat.

Throuple From “Disloyal Boyfriend” Meme
You surely saw this meme make the rounds this year, in which “disloyal boyfriend” is caught by “angry girlfriend” looking at “another girl.” The best thing about these costumes is how easy they are: All you need is a red shirt, a blue plaid shirt, and another blue shirt. You can all wear whatever you want on the bottom, since the famous stock photo cuts off each person at the waist. Master Another Girl’s plaintive smile, Disloyal Boyfriend’s whistling up-down look, and Angry Girlfriend’s indignation, then take a photo and you’re set for the night.

Sex and the City 3 Undead Zombies
We can’t stop talking about the Sex and the City 3 movie that never was. There are always plenty of Samanthas, Carries, Mirandas, and Charlottes every year, but will there be zombie versions stomping around on Halloween night? Hopefully yes, if many, many people take our advice. Find your perfect SATC outfit and zombie-fy it with a cheap makeup kit—then tell everyone that we will never not be talking about this freaking movie.

Most Popular Halloween Costumes 2017

Naturally, we’re happier than kids in a (Halloween) candy store. At POPSUGAR, we don’t take Halloween lightly; we start burning Autumn-scented candles as soon as the first leaf changes, taste-test pumpkin spice snacks in the middle of Summer, and begin our horror movie marathons immediately after Labor Day. For some people, it’s a holiday — for us, it’s a freakin’ lifestyle.

When our editors are on the ground covering fan events like Comic-Con and WonderCon, they’re observing the latest cosplay trends with Halloween on the brain. Meanwhile, we’re always making note of cultural conversations unfolding on the internet and looking at them through a Halloween lens: would this meme make a good costume? Is that celebrity moment perfect Halloween inspiration? The day-to-day stories that get us talking are often some of the best costume fodder come Oct. 31, so we’ve always got an eye out for the next big thing.

Using our editors’ passion for Halloween, we’ve created a master list of the top 10 costumes for 2017. You can expect to see these ocostumes everywhere this October, but don’t worry: we’ve also got the scoop on how to execute them like nobody else.
