Keeping Up With The Kardashians Diet, Fitness Trends

Thanks to their spellbinding show, relentless social media presence, and popular apps, the Kardashians — particularly the three oldest sisters — have overshared to a point where it feels like we know them on an intimate level, according to Christina Beck, PhD, a communication professor at Ohio University and author of Celebrity Health Narratives and the Public Health. So, although we may sense that their advice is misguided or uninformed (for example, suggesting an unnecessary vaginal skincare routine), we trust them because we feel like we know and understand their story, Dr. Beck says. The Kardashians are unlikely role models, and that’s why it works: They swear incessantly, talk frankly about their genitals, have tumultuous love lives, and put it all on display for fans.

An Adelaide paediatric nurse has started a new mobile braiding business so that kids can keep up with the Kardashians

ON-TREND parents are hiring hairstylists so they can keep up with the Kardashians.

The Kardashian sisters, including reality TV star Kim, have brought complex hair braids back into fashion and parents are keen to recreate the look for their kids.

Paediatric nurse, Jaz Taladucon, 27, has started a mobile braiding service — Hair by Jaz — where she hosts braiding parties in people’s homes. “The Kardashians brought braids back, making them acceptable for everyday styles,” she said.

The modern braid is more complicated, she said, adding that popular styles included the pull-through, the figure eight, the fishtail Dutch, the waterfall and the zipper.

And it’s not surprising today’s Generation Y parents want their children on-trend.

“Gen Y is the most marketed-to generation … so the influence of celebrity trends is in their day-to-day world,” said McCrindle social researcher Ashley Fell. Adelaide mother Melanie Millwood said she didn’t have time to braid daughter Sophie’s hair but tips from Ms Taladucon were good.

“From a parent’s perspective, (braiding) is a visible expression of the love and care they put in and a visible display of the parent’s own trendiness.”

Hair and Beauty Industry Association chief Sandra Campitelli said braiding was one of the hottest trends.

“If done well, it looks great and it’s a good way of keeping their hair tidy … if you can get your child to sit still,” she said.

TIPS FOR THE PERFECT BRAIDS

KEEP fingers separate to avoid tangles

USE texture powder and hairspray for hold

USE clips and pins to keep away the hair that isn’t being used

“FAN” out your braid to make it look thicker

DON’T be worried if it’s not neat

BRAID your hair two or three days post-wash

BRAIDS can make simple hairstyles look more interesting, so try plaiting your ponytail before twisting it into a bun

How to create a Snow Princess Ponytail?

1. Apply serum to damp hair and blowdry smooth with a blow dryer and flat brush.

2. Create a clean middle part, then another part from the arch of the eyebrow to the crown of the head. Clip the rest of the hair away.

3. Apply smoothing pomade to the roots then create a Dutch Braid on either side of the middle part. When the braid reaches the crown, create a 3 strand braid to the ends and secure.

4. Apply more pomade to the roots of the rest of the hair then use a fine tooth comb to gather into a high pony.

5. Spray a smoothing brush with hairspray then brush into a smooth pony and secure with a hair bungee.

6. Use a 1 inch iron to curl through the length of the pony and wrap the base.

WHAT ARE THE MOST REQUESTED LOOKS BY CELEBRITIES?

Even though Ms Majan is known for her braid styles, she is more than happy to experiment on those who are up for it.

‘I definitely think people come to me for braided looks, but I would hate to get stuck in a box,’ the TRESemme global ambassador said.

I love doing everything from super sleek looks, to tonnes of texture, to big ponytails and updos, to topknots.

‘I’m lucky that there is so much to do with hair and we can have fun with it by changing it every day!’

Two of her most recent looks on model Olivia Culpo have been popular – a ‘Snow Princess Ponytail’ and a chic ‘Braided Topknot.’

The ponytail, which sees Culpo’s hair scraped up into a stunning high style with two plaits running down the centre of her hair.

WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION?

Ms Marjan finds most of her inspiration for celebrity looks in the fashion world and on catwalks like those at New York Fashion Week.

‘There are so many talented people who lead shows and work backstage that come up with such inspirational looks. Odile Gilbert has been an icon to me from the very beginning and I love how she always has a feminine touch to the hair,’ she said.

‘I think we each find our signature that is unique to us.

‘For each client specifically I always think about their face shape, their personal style, the outfit they’re wearing, and the event they are attending. The hair is just one part of the complete look, so each aspect should complement each other.’

HOW TO YOU COME UP WITH LOOKS FOR THE RUNWAY?

Ms Marjan is all about balancing her own expertise with the designer’s vision.

‘It’s all about the overall look of the “girl” the designer wants to represent their line,’ she explained.

‘I work with the designer and makeup artist to find a hairstyle that completes the overall image and the feel of the show. So much of what we do is about working as a team.’

How do you create beautiful voluminous waves at home?

For a look like Khloe Kardashian’s:

1. Always apply a mousse to the roots

2. Blow dry it in with a hairdryer, paying a lot of attention to the roots to create lift and volume – this ensures it lasts

3. Post styling, spray dry shampoo at the roots and massage it in to add lift or spray it in through the mid lengths for an additional airy finish

Products she recommends for waves: TRESemme Beauty-Full Volume Mousse and their Dry Shampoo

WHAT IS THE TOP HAIR TREND OF 2017?

While braids, buns and Tinkerbell fringes were all the rage in 2016, Ms Marjan believes the top look in 2017 is far more minimal.

‘I think we will see more LONG lengths and the return of sleek, shiny, healthy looking hair,’ she said.

This style can be seen on a number of celebrities at NYFW and Khloe Kardashian recently rocked the look at a Christmas eve party.

HOW SHOULD PEOPLE FIND INSPIRATION FOR HAIRSTYLES?

With social media, Ms Majan says finding inspiration is easier than ever.

‘Social media has made everything so much more attainable and accessible on a global level,’ she said.

‘I always save photos from Instagram as references. I love seeing how models are wearing their hair off duty and what looks are in the major fashion campaigns. I love fashion week for the runway looks and street style.’
