Sydney’s A-list celebrities reveal what fashion trends they will wear this spring, summer

AS David Jones sent the latest designer looks for spring and summer down the catwalk last night, Sydney’s A-list have revealed what will be hot in their closet once the weather warms up.

Top Aussie models Bridget Malcolm, Shanina Shaik, Jessica Gomes and Jesinta Franklin led a catwalk parade featuring a flurry of ’80s silhouettes, bright tropical prints, Victoriana inspired-lace, high necklines, soft pinks and bold reds.

And while the trends were all warmly received, some of Sydney’s most famous faces talked about the new styles they were keen to champion — although some admitted they might not embrace all the key looks of the new season.

Today host Sylvia Jeffreys said she would not dare don some of the sky-high heels she saw walking the runway — and usually ditches the heels in summer.

“As a faithful ugg boot wearer, I’m embracing the return of the flats,” Jeffreys told The Daily Telegraph. “I’m tall. I have 11.5-size feet so I love a flat.”

Shoe designer Terry Biviano hopes to experiment with more colour this summer and has her eye on some of the one-piece swimsuits paraded last night.

“I’m definitely done with black but it’s always in fashion, which is hard,” she said.

“I like a bikini but one-pieces are in. I should be wearing a one-piece after having children, I’m glad they’re having a moment.”

Actor Teresa Palmer is also hoping to branch out into some of the bold fruity patterns she saw last night.

“My go-to is black or white so this summer I’m going to put in some colour, some peaches and lemon,” she said. “I need to be more comfortable in colour.”

While the men on the catwalk showcased bold tropical prints and bright colours, Bachelor Matty J said he’s prefers to stick with what he knows.

“I’m very traditional and even in terms of colour schemes,” he said. “I’m going to wear blacks, white greys and that’s it.”

Former Sydney Swans player Adam Goodes said a recent European summer holiday had made him rethink wearing budgie smugglers.

“I definitely won’t be rocking speedos in summer,” he said. “I wear short boardies, something comfortable.”

The parade which showcased 230 looks from 40 brands was the last to be held in the iconic On Seven room on level seven of the brand’s flagship Elizabeth St store, before the store undergoes a $200 million refurbishment.

More than 330 A-list fashion and celebrity guests attended the launch.

Dennis Quaid won’t reveal other people in threesome. Hollywood actor Dennis Quaid has admitted to having threesomes as he appeared as a guest on ‘Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen’. The 63-year-old actor has confessed to having engaged in sex with two other people at the same time during a candid conversation on ‘Watch What Happens Live With Andy Cohen’ – although he refused to reveal the identity of the other participants. The ‘Parent Trap’ actor confirmed to the host that he’d previously had a threesome, before adding: “[I’ve] never had any complaints, let’s put it that way.” In a segment dubbed ‘Menacing The Dennis’, after the actor moaned about being asked feeble questions during a previous appearance on the show, Dennis was also asked about his history of drug use. Dennis, who has battled drug addiction and an eating disorder during his life, revealed the most dangerous drug he’d ever tried was cocaine, confessing he never turned

to heroin because he was scared by the possible consequences. He said: “I didn’t try heroin because I thought, ‘If I love this stuff I’m really gone.’” During the show, Dennis was also asked by Andy whether his ex-wife Meg Ryan had ever wanted to reunite with him. The actor, who was married to Meg from 1991 until 2001, revealed he tried to resurrect their romance, but she wasn’t interested in taking him back. Clarifying the situation, Dennis said: “I called her up and tried but it didn’t work.” Meanwhile, Dennis admitted earlier this year he decided to address his drug problem after he had a “white-light moment”. Dennis initially had an experimental attitude towards drugs, but subsequently realised they posed a very real threat to his health and, therefore, he decided to seek professional help. He said: “I saw myself dead in five years or at least losing everything I had worked for and wanted in life and so I put myself in a treatment centre for 28 days and I did everything they said. “I was able to quit drinking and smoking pot for the next 10 years.”

Health: Mumbai’s favourite celebrity trainers reveal latest fitness trends

Ranveer Singh and Hrithik RoshanRanveer Singh and Hrithik Roshan

Body weight exercises

What is it?
The beauty of this trend, says Mustafa Ahmed, owner of Akro and trainer to Hrithik Roshan and Ranveer Singh (in pic above), is that it lets you take exercise outdoors.

Ahmed believes that it is more important to connect with nature. “Lifting weights will give you muscle. But if you can’t employ that muscle outdoors, in your daily life, what’s the use? A housewife doesn’t need to do a barbell curl to lead a healthy life, but she needs to have stamina and strength to be able to walk for long periods or spend the major part of the day outdoors without it affecting her. You won’t learn that from a machine,” he says, adding that his gym is designed to give the feel of the outdoors, with natural light, bars, ropes and a monkey bar.

“Fitness cannot be done chained to machines. It is about managing your body weight and having more control over your surroundings. Body weight exercises use the body as a tool; you can do it anywhere, even outdoors,” he says.

Ahmed’s workouts include mobility drills, push-ups, squats, frog leaps, and guerilla walks.

Benefits
The advantage with body-weight workouts is that they are pain-free. They are easy to do, and use your body’s resistance to burn fat, improve balance, flexibility, endurance and strength without the need for machinery. “They will help improve your mobility and prevent injury. If you do the right form of training, you can be fit and healthy, and build a great physique,” assures Ahmed.

Circuit pilates

What is it?
Celebrity fitness trainer Yasmin Karachiwala is kicked about a new fad that she’s introduced to Bollywood’s swish set. “In circuit pilates, we have stations with different pilates machines. People have to move from station to station within a given time frame,” says Karachiwala of Body Image Personal Training Studio. The trainer who has worked with the likes of Kareena Kapoor Khan, Katrina Kaif and Sonakshi Sinha, has just introduced Alia Bhatt to the workout.

The first round lasts one minute, the second for 45 seconds, and the third round, 30 seconds. In between each round, there is a two-minute break for simple cardio. There are four machines used in this workout — core activation is done on the reformer, lower body strength on the chair, upper body strength on the trapeze and balance on the coralline.

Benefits
Circuit Pilates is a whole body workout. “It improves your coordination, core control, gets your heart rate up, improves upper and lower body strength and balance, and the circuit has a bit of cardio too,” says Karachiwala.

Mobility/Stability training for movement

Mobility/Stability training for movement

What is it?
Our body is made in a way that certain joints need to be stable while others need to be mobile for optimum functioning and good movement quality, says Urmi Kothari, IFAA Master Trainer and Founder of Kinetic Living. Any imbalance in this leads to injuries. For this, mobility and active flexibility combined with stability is crucial. “Mobility is the range of uninhibited movement available at a joint. Stability comes from the strength and adaptive nature of the muscles, tendons and ligaments around a joint,” says Kothari.

For a general fitness enthusiast, dedicated mobility, active flexibility and stability drills once or twice a week are sufficient. “This is a low-impact workout that involves stretching the muscles that tend to overwork, and tightening and strengthening muscles that tend to weaken. Using foam rollers can release knots in the muscles that occur due to over-training or over straining,” she adds.

Benefits
The benefits include improved posture at rest and in movement, increase in body awareness, reduced chances of injury in load bearing joints, increased energy efficiency due to correct weight distribution over the joints, and keeping the body supple and light. “People with back, knee, and hip issues are loving it because it restores their mobility” she says.

Strength and conditioning/ Exercise science

What is it?
Certified strength and conditioning specialist Praveen Tokas credits the booming sports market in India for bringing the strength and conditioning workout back into the public eye. It is a study course that applies scientific knowledge to help people and improve their physical abilities, Tokas has been using it extensively. “This workout is designed to make you stronger, leaner and energetic with the science of strength and conditioning techniques. It incorporates different components of fitness,” he says, adding that Emraan Hashmi and Imran Khan are doing offshoots of this method.

The workout has three phases. “It begins with mobility drills to open up the joints; the main section has exercises such as dead lifts, lunges, push-ups, pull ups and multi-joint movements; and the cooling down phase involves yoga,” says Tokas, adding that it needs to be done at least twice a week.

Benefits
A tailored programme results in tougher ligaments, improved flexibility, and prevents injuries. Although it feels like a hardcore workout, Tokas mentions this routine can be customised. “Anyone and everyone can do it. You don’t need a level of fitness.” It also helps avoid under- and over-training, and angular movement training helps you finish your workout without feeling drained out.

3 Celebrity Hairstylists Reveal Autumn’s Biggest Hair Colour Trends

blorange hair trend, hair colour trend,
Image: pinterest.com/source/instagram.com

“It’s just because we’re blonde,” he said, matter-of-factly.

“You’re not blonde,” I replied, wondering how someone who obsesses over their hair so often had failed to realise that his youthful golden locks had turned brown. He looked horrified, as if those three words had stripped him of his entire identity.

A week into autumn, my boyfriend got a haircut. His summer tips were swept away on the dresser’s tiled floor and he didn’t seem happy about it.

Changing your hair colour at the beginning of a season isn’t uncommon. Unlike my boyfriend, for most, it’s a deliberate decision. But whether chosen or not, it always brings a new sense of identity, a fresh look.

As we move into autumn, it seems the leaves aren’t the only things changing colour. Straight from Paris and New York Fashion Weeks and ahead of Sydney’s, we spoke to three celebrity hairstylists to find out what colours are trending this season. Here’s what they had to say.

1Blorange

Image: pinterest.com/brit/

Monique McMahon, director of Que Colour who’s responsible for the luscious locks of Delta Goodrem, Natalie Imbruglia, Melanie Grant, and Jessica Sepel says, “Blorange is the next big thing in colour—a soft pinky, orangey blonde. You can dial the orange tone up or down depending on how confident you feel with the concept! You’re aiming for a rose gold end result. Think Georgia May Jagger.

People are just starting to get on board with this trend. I’m excited for it. We’ve seen it cropping up more and more on social media (#blorangeisthenewblack). We’re moving away from the girly pinks into something fresh with a touch of warm citrus.

[It’s great for autumn because] blorange has the perfect hint of warmth, and can be incorporated into most hair colours (red, blonde, brunette) whether you want to keep it subtle, or go all the way.”

2Violet

Image: pinterest.com/source/instagram.com

Darren Summors, lead artist at Aveda who recently worked on the Tibi, Tome, Hellessey and Assembly The Label shows at NYFW and styled the likes of Tash Sefton, Elle Ferguson and Mimi Elashisry says, “I think violet will be a key colour on everyone’s pallet this season. I’ve been doing a lot of cool, smokey pastel violets recently, transitioning summer blondes for autumn.

It’s great for autumn because you can shade the roots with a darker violet to add a bit of depth and richness while still maintaining face-framing, lighter ends. Violet also looks good on paler skin tones and goes great with the darker winter wardrobe!”

3Deep Auburn

Image: pinterest.com/source/instagram.com

Celebrity stylist and Pure Hair Food ambassador, Jenny Kim who’s worked with Stella Maxwell, Pheobe Tonkin, Bella Hadid and Gemma Ward says, “As I don’t work in a salon, I am influenced by the jobs I work on—whether they are editorials, show seasons or Fashion Weeks. I personally am a fan of natural styles but have noticed a lot of deep auburn reds roaming the streets of Paris this year. I’ve always loved a redhead, whether it’s natural or bottled! If your colouring suits, this could be a great way to spice things up for the approaching cold weather, as it’s easier to maintain than blonde and a great pop of colour. Embrace the colour!” She recommends Pure Hair Food Repair Your Hair Masque as a weekly maintenance treatment for coloured hair.
